Live Search for BlackBerry (Beta) - FAQ

Last updated on: November 20, 2007

We have collected your feedback and have put together a list of Frequently Asked Questions below. If your issue is not listed, or to send us further feedback, please write to lsmobile@microsoft.com. We will update this page periodically.

1. When I try to download the Live Search application, I receive an error, “Module 'Live_Search-1' not found”.

It seems that there is a problem with the browser cache on some devices.

To correct this, when downloading the application, please confirm that the version is "1.5.2860.13336" and not "1.5.2838.909". If you get the wrong version, select Menu > "Refresh" on the same screen (with the download/cancel buttons). This should show the right version. Download the application and reboot your device.

2. When I open the wls.live.com download page, I can only see links for the Windows Mobile version of Live Search.
Some BlackBerry browsers are configured to emulate a Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, and hence our site detects it as a Windows Mobile phone.

To correct this, in your BlackBerry browser, press Menu > Options > Browser Configuration. Here, you will see an option called Emulation Mode. Set this to BlackBerry, save and exit.  The next time you open the browser and access the site, you should see the correct link – to the BlackBerry version.

3. My phone hangs at the GPS initialization screen.
This problem is mostly seen on the BlackBerry 8830 (Verizon Wireless), as the GPS seems to be locked. One way to get past this is to go to the BlackBerry’s GPS settings under Options, and changing it from 911 Only to Location. This should prevent the application from hanging.

4. Why is Live Search only available in major cities?
Why can I not search around an address, ZIP code or airport code?
The Live Search application works in all of United States. You can enter any location by pressing Menu > Enter New Location or by selecting Near: > Enter New Location. Here you can enter any location (address, ZIP code, city name, airport, point of interest etc.).

6. Are there any shortcuts for panning, zoom, etc?
Absolutely! You can use the following shortcuts while viewing the map:

Full Keyboard (QWERTY)
    2/8/4/6      Up/Down/Left/Right
    5/enter      Select
    I/O
Zoom In/Out
    P/space    Prev./Next

Reduced Keyboard (SureType)
    2/8/4/6     Up/Down/Left/Right
    5/enter    Select
    9/7
          Zoom In/Out
    1/3          Prev./Next

Archived FAQ

1. When I try to access the wls.live.com page, I get an error “HTTP 503. Service Unavailable”.
The BlackBerry browser automatically adds a “www” in front of the URL, making it http://www.wls.live.com. However, this is incorrect. The actual URL is http://wls.live.com. Try removing the “www” and accessing the site again.

2. When I try to download the Live Search application, I receive an error, “907 Invalid COD”.
This error is seen mostly on the newer BlackBerry 8300 series (Curve) and some BlackBerry 8800 series models. While we are still investigating what exactly is causing this issue, there are two solutions that seem to mitigate this problem.
1.) Use the Internet Browser to download the application instead of any other browser (MEdia Net, T-Zones, Opera Mini etc.). The Cingular/AT&T Browsers seem to generate this error.
2.) Remove the battery, wait for 15 seconds, reinsert the battery and try downloading the application again. Sometimes this seems to solve the issue.

If neither of the above work, please be patient… We are actively investigating a fix and we'll post an update as soon as we release it.

3. My BlackBerry has built-in GPS. Why can Live Search not detect it?
The only BlackBerry devices with an actual built-in GPS are the 8800 series and the 8310. The rest of the devices (mostly CDMA based ones by Sprint, Verizon, etc.) have cell-tower based location detection, sometimes referred to as A-GPS. We are currently working to extend GPS support for these devices soon. Please note that you can use a Bluetooth GPS with any supported BlackBerry device.

4. I have a BlackBerry 8700g and am unable to view any options on the map.
I have a BlackBerry 8700g and am unable to scroll left/right by pressing Alt+Wheel.

You have most likely upgraded the firmware of your BlackBerry 8700g to the 4.2.1 version. There are some compatibility issues around the way the 8700g handles the trackwheel, keyboard and GPS. We have found a solution and will be updating your version soon.

5. My Bluetooth GPS pairs successfully, but disconnects just seconds later.
This problem is seen in devices running BlackBerry OS (Firmware version) 4.2.1 and over. A conflict in the the way your device handles GPS and the way Live Search expects it is causing this issue. We are working on a fix and will be released shortly.
